Product publicity is the "secret pathway" to business success everyone wants. After all, it's "free advertising" that is essential to the growth of your business. However, your publicity efforts should be well thought out, and pre-planned for maximum results.  While there are several online press release services - PRWeb has been providing quality press release services for several years and sends your press release to over 40,000 news services. APD Tactic 2
Understanding the Purpose and the
Goal of a Press Release is to 'Get the Call'

Structuring and formatting your press release for distribution is critical to getting your press release read and acted on.  Suffice it to say that your headline, and the story you present to the editor, must sell him/her on the benefits of your product or service to his/her readers. Unless it specifically does this, he/she will not use it.

You must sell the first person receiving your materials. Keep this fact uppermost in your mind as you write it. The person you send your press or publicity release to, must quickly see and understand how your product or service will benefit his/her readers - there by making him/her a hero to them - and he/she must be assured it will do what you promise in your headline.  You want the media to contact you for more information - that is important.

APD Tactic 3 - Press Release Tips

  • Be sure to format your press release correctly.  When working with your local media, provide a cover letter that tells them "who" you are.   Remember - all news starts locally - if one of the big news wires or TV news picks it up.......

  • The headline must do almost all of the work in attracting attention to your press release. Just as with articles, the headline must grab the readers attention and want them to read more. Your headline is your "advertisement" for your press release - make it bold and powerful.

  • The first part of your press release text body is called the summary. In just the first few lines of the release, you need tell your entire story. Think of the basic who, what, where, when.  Save the details for later on.

  • In the next part, you want establish credibility and convey a professional background of your company. This is not self promotion - think more in terms of qualifications. In this part write a compelling quote - think sound bite - that is what the media loves. At then end of the quote put one or more of your credentials.

  • The close or call to action - remember you are not writing a sales pitch - you are writing an informational press release.  Your purpose is to get the editor/reporter to read your press release and to take action by contacting you for an interview or for more information.   Do not try to sell your product here or your press release will hit the waste-can quicker than you can say "press release".  The media does not want to give you free advertising.  Their goal is to provide their readers/viewers current and relevant news - so give them what they want.

  • Be ready for the phone call or interview.  The media wants nice sound bites - be ready to provide them with several.  Write them down on flash cards to help you along during the interview.  (1) - the elevator pitch - what's it all about in 15 seconds (2) - who your product will help and why  (3) - what is unique or special about your product (4) - where can people learn more (5) - is there controversy - the media loves that

  • The end of a press release is signaled by one of two symbols, centered on the page below your final paragraph. The two standard symbols indicating the end of a press release are: ### or -30-

APD Tactic 4 - Utilize Online Niche News Services

One of the great aspects of the web is for specialization of information.  Instead of learning of the latest news and information from a general news service - there are many niche specific online news services that target directly the targeted audience that your product or service caters to.  By providing these types of sites with your news - you can reach a ready made targeted audience.

For example: In the Internet Marketing niche there is the site Internet Marketing Newswatch, where you can submit the latest information on internet marketing related products, services, or events.  Almost every niche you can think of has a "news" type of site.

The simplest method for locating such a site to submit to, is to google "main keyword online news" where "main keyword" is the the main descriptive term for that particular niche ei. internet marketing, golf, fishing, boating.  I have seen some great search engine listings as the result of submitting to these types of sites.  A great side benefit is that many of these sites have rss feeds - so not only will your "news" appear on the site you submit to - but also on all of the sites that use that news service's rss feeds.
